Crazy Camp Craftiness!

It wouldn't be sock camp without the crafty! Crafty fun number one involved taking an old or wornout sock and creating a whimsical, Seussical character. I brought my first sock. It is about two sizes too wide and too short! No holes though :)

Meet Pinky Perfect Princess Who!

Pinky Perfect Princess Who

Pinky Perfect Princess Who

My fellow "Who" tribe member Ann named her in just about 2 seconds (me, I struggled for an hour to come up with a name). I think Pinky Perfect Princess Who is destined to inspire a sock design! And lil' snowboarder's response to her...."Wooooowwwww!! Is she for me!??" She sure is. We just can't mess up her feathers :)

Crafty fun Day 2 brought buttons. Who knew making buttons would be so fun?!!

Erica captured her new-found-love of Twilight while at sock camp (okay, actually, she was so sick of us telling her how close we were to Port Angeles and Forks that she caved and watched the movies.... now she sparkles in the sunlight...).

IMG_3362

My buttons don't sparkle, but still fun! And I think I have a new motto... "Go Girlie!"

Then of course there was the "boobie" homework, being as this was Camp Cattywampus. Remember, I cast on on the plane to camp, so I think these turned out okay.

Then there is the Boobie 1 colorway.

My brain has been bubbling with designs since taking my fabulous classes at camp. More about that later.

Merrily

There was some knitting at Sock Camp too. Mostly on my Merrily Sock. I'm loving how it is knitting up in STR Sassafras.

I think this pattern can work nicely with Socks that Rock! So, let's have a little giveaway shall we. I'll be giving away 5 free copies of Merrily in celebration of my almost 500th post! I think I'm just a few posts away but I need some ideas for anything you'd like to know or see or hear about on the blog! Leave a suggestion and you're entered in the contest!

I'll be back with lots more sock camp photos this weekend!

Happy Friday!
xoxo Irishgirlieknits

Sock camp looks like it was super fun. Beer and knitting and general craftiness? Can't beat it!

I'll just wait for you to design awesome socks! Because you're really good at it! Even with all the inspiration of camp, I don't want to grow up to be a designer! So...I'd love to win your pattern.

Congratulations on all of your knit designs. Your new Burst pattern is very pretty!

Right now I'm knitting a pair of Cotty socks in an STR Mediumweight Rare Gem Mill End water tone. It's a really fun knit!

I'd like to see more of your sock designs and how your Tickled Pink Blanket That Rocks is coming along.

I love seeing your knits in progress and your sock designs on the blog. I am working on the Slip Jig socks and they are great fun! I've already ordered more yarn to do it again!

LOL...how funny that colorway is "Boobie #1"!! The only thing missing from the blog lately has been 1) the pink blankie, 2) more pups, 3) your smiling face!

I love seeing your designing get more and more popular with sock knitters. It's wonderful. Do you think that you will write a book in your future?
I would like to see a blog about the process of what you do to design a sock.
Is the yarn first or the pattern. Do you doodle on graph paper or draw it out. Or do you just start knitting?

Zennor said...

How many swatches do you have to make when designing a sock? Maybe you could show us some of the attempt - the bad ones too!!!!

Anna said...

I'd like to hear about the first time you saw a skein of STR. ;)

yay for camp craftiness! love PPP!

Looks like so much fun. Love your Irish boobies. I've got a couple of those myself!

Ooooh I'm just enjoying reading about your trip to Sock Camp (and wishing I was there-- I'm friends with Alice and heard about Camp from her last week at Knit Night! I'm so jealous!!). Keep up the Sock Camp-y posts! :D

Those are some cute, crafty Irish boobies. Love the boobies 1 colorway too. I enjoy just reading about your knitting and designing, since designing is a foreign process to me.

Sock camp looks like a blast! I'd love to read a post about how you saw your blog when you first started vs. how you see it today.

Christine said...

What a blast you had at Camp. I would like to see more about how you come up with your designs - do you watch patterns, do you ready stitch pattern books to see how it would fit into your sock designs? I like your simple yet elegant designs.

I love to hear about your travels to New Orleans. I live in Hammond, less than an hour from New Orleans, so we're there all of the time. I'd love to win your pattern.

Angela said...

How about a recap of your design career to date. I'd love to see the progression of your socks in one place!

PPP Who is too cute! I like your Lucky "boobies" too ;) I too would like to know how you first found out about STR/BMFA, what was the first skein that "got" you. Also the designing process, that just amazes me to no end. I don't have the time or patience to do that, so I'm in awe of people that can. :)

Looks like you had a blast! I'd like to see some info on lever knitting that you learn at these camps and conferences!

gMarie said...

I would love to hear more about the process - without giving too much away. I'm in awe of people who can go from "seeing" something, to actually knitting it, and then to creating the pattern to share it. thanks for that.

I also love seeing the dogs :) g

I'm so glad we were both members of the Who team at camp; it was nice to get to know you better. Happy memories here of the scavenger hunt and our eventual win via the "dexterous knitting" tie-breaker!! That was nerve-wracking!
How do you come up with your designs?I look forward to knitting more of them soon.

Jean said...

What would I like to know??? Hmm!
How about how can I get my socks to stay up?
Love the designs and love the photos. thanks
Jean

I'd actually like to know what your design process is like. Is it easy? Is it hard? Does it take lots of planning? Etc.

Madeleine Fitzgerald said...

Tremendously clever boobies! I can't believe you did those on the fly (or flight as the case may be).

Camp looked like so much fun!!

I would like you to discuss variegated vs solid for different sock designs.

Thanks!

What started your knitting mojo and what is your connection with STR?

Pink Princess is fabulous, but the Irish Boobies are a masterpiece!

Lindsay said...

Ahaha! The Wild Irish Boobies struck my funny bone. Everything looks great!

I love your socks! (I have your 'slip jig' socks from STR club on the needles.) Since I'm becoming a much better knitter - and not much of a designer - I'd love to hear more about the desiging process. Some of the 'ins and outs' you have to keep in mind to make the patterns work. (What kinds of cuffs stay up best? What are the pros and cons of toe-up or cuff-down? Why choose one type of heel over another?) News and pictures of Little Man and lil' snowboarder are always a bit hit with me. Congratulations on "nearly 500" I've loved them. salam wa sa'aadah Linda

I LOVE your boobs! Ha ha!

And I've always wondered about those eyes I've seen for sale and what they'd look good on. Now I know!

Sock camp sounds like great fun.
I'd like to hear more about how you became a designer

I'd love to hear more about how you got into designing and where you plan to go with it in the future.

Thanks for letting us enjoy Sock Camp vicariously through you.

I love your designs! I too would like to know more about the process of getting and idea from your amazing brain to a finished design. The entire process fascinates me, I tend to 'think' I have a good idea but it always goes bad VERY bad!

I really enjoy your blog! It's great hearing about sock camp & seeing your WIP photos - great sock inspiration! I'd also love to hear more about how you came to start designing & about your design process.

Hi Irishgirlie. I met you at camp 2 years ago (2008) and spoke with you a few times. I am a little quiet so you might not remember me. I was the other pregnant woman at camp. I have had to miss camp the last 2 years, but I will see you next year! I absolutely love your pattern and colorway from the Rockin sock club. I would like to see more pictures of your knitting in progress. Also I would like to see some pictures and hear the stories from when you started knitting socks. Oh yeah anymore pictures from sock camp:)

Happy Almost 500!

I've really enjoyed hearing about your experiences at Sock Camp.

I would really enjoy seeing what "inspires" you to design certain patterns.

Jodee said...

I too want to know how you come up with designs.

momwhoknits said...

I seem to be echoing many others - but the design process fascinates me - especially as I find it hard to deviate even slightly from the written instructions. I also like your pattern names, so would like to know - does the name come - and then the pattern - or vice versa?

Unknown said...

I would like to hear about how you choose designs for your patterns.

Unknown said...

I'd like to see more pictures of you!!! :)

I always like hearing about your inspirations for the patterns you create. The story behind the sock always makes it special in my mind. Thanks for sharing that!

Thanks for the posts about Sock Camp. Picking up on many other comments, I'd love to hear where your inspirations come from. Wild Irish Boobies, for example.

I am knitting SlipJig, 2AAT, and loving them.

I love your Sock Camp report - so jealous that you were there! I would really like to hear more about your history - how you got into knitting socks and designing patterns, inspirations and muses. Your patterns are fun and doable - I really enjoy them.

I am curious of just how much STR that you have in your stash or would it be too much to divulge???

Oooh, I hope I'm not too late for the contest, I was just looking at this pattern on knitpicks! I would love to see more knitting in progress pics, especially socks that rock. I was so inspired by your picture of dutch canyon a couple weeks ago that I immediately placed my own order :)

Love the updates on your new designs when they come out. I loved your Queen Alice design for the Woolgirl club...was wondering if it will be exclusive forever. I would buy it if I could. I just cast on Cotty, and I love the Slip Jig you designed for the blue moon club. Look forward to seeing more of your designs!

OMG, Carrie-your boobies turned out terrific! Awesome You! Can't hardly wait to see what new designs you'll be creating. Camp sounds like it was fun as it always is-and I'm sure it was even more fun doing the Slip Jig out on the lawn! Now the Port Ludlow staff must really be reeling!
